Sustainability

Dynamics of Youth finds it important to promote the sustainability of existing networks, research, activities, and investments such as, FAIRification and investments in sustainable collaborations. By strengthening coordinating mechanisms and expanding networks, we increase the sustainability, visibility and scalability of our activities and create opportunities for connection and innovation.

FAIR data project

Dynamics of Youth has the ambition to make all data within the theme as FAIR as possible – Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. The projects and cohorts within Dynamics of Youth can benefit from greater visibility, so researchers can find and reuse data in order to answer a wider range of questions. Datasets could be exchanged or combined to form novel collaborations, start exciting projects, and address pressing issues.

Despite the benefits, the process of FAIRifying youth data can seem daunting. It’s difficult to determine which data can be safely shared, with whom, and under which circumstances – particularly when there is (personal) data of minors involved. The FAIR data project was set up, in collaboration with RDM Support, with the aim to support DoY researchers to make their data FAIR more easily.

The activities of the FAIR data project include the development of templates, workflows, protocols, and other tools that will encourage and facilitate researchers within Dynamics of Youth to share their data in line with the FAIR principles. For example, we provided hands-on support to the PROactive cohort study to FAIRify their data, using the following workflow:

This resulted in a (meta)data publication on DataverseNL, see https://doi.org/10.34894/FXUGHW.

In addition to providing hands-on support to researchers in FAIRifying their data, we are working on a FAIR data handbook and a FAIR data catalog for Dynamics of Youth. The handbook will contain guidance on how to FAIRify data and related RDM subjects. The topics will range from writing a data management plan (DMP) and informed consent forms, to data publishing and data sharing. On the other hand, the FAIR data catolog will contain an overview of research projects and associated data within Dynamics of Youth. Based on this overview, we may be able to build a searchable and informative catalog that could be helpful for collaborations and data sharing.

If you have any questions, or you want to discuss FAIR data for your project, please contact Femke Everaarts (Dynamics of Youth) and Neha Moopen (RDM Support).

Watch the video: “The importance of FAIR data”

Reusing and controlling data makes science more efficient, more reliable and more sustainable. UU- Dynamics of Youth, UMCU-Child Health Program and the Princess Máxima Center have the ambition of making data FAIR – Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable – in practice. In this video researchers Anne HoefnagelsJob Teepen and Coosje Veldkamp tell more about their work to make data FAIR in this video and why this is important.
