DoY Meet-Up – Art, Education and Science – An impression

On the 7th of May, the second DoY Meet-Up took place. This time hosted by the Youth Education and Life Skills community. This Meet-Up started with a round table followed by networking drinks. The theme of the Round Table  was ‘the interaction between education, arts and science”.

We met at the beautiful Theater de Berenkuil. The round table was in the theatre room, which fit well with the theme of arts, education and science. Jaqui Goldin started off our round table with a presentation. She is an active member of the YELS community and has been executing research project together with Janwillem Liebrand: Diamonds on the soles of our feet, which has received funding by YELS.  She shared her passion and enthusiasm with the group. Jaqui mentioned several very inspiring things regarding her project, such as how to let children connect with science through art. For example, having the children draw their lives as waterflows.

During the round table the participants shared something about their diverse backgrounds and how they connect to the topic. There were people attending from all corners of the university, such as: Geosciences, Copernicus Institute, Social Sciences, Marine and Atmospheric Research, Humanities, International Development Studies. Questions were discussed such as ‘what is the difference between experiential learning and learning using art’, ‘is art only made by professional artists or can anyone do, and anything be art?’, ‘how can educational art works of students be used as data for research?’. The participants discussed different art related education practises, such as a dream meditation process in which students should imagine what creature they would be, without limitations, to see where their strengths lie and how to apply this to their research processes.

These fruitful conversations continued during the drinks that followed the round table. Some new colleagues joined us for the drinks, opening up new conversations in the Berenkuil’s bright foyer. There was a lot of mingling, sparkling conversations and new connections were made. Throughout the meet-up, the atmosphere was very light and open. We look forward to further getting to know each and meeting more people at the next DoY Meet-Up on the 6th of June!
