BACW Workshop on Social Media and Mental Health at The InnBetween Maastricht

On March 15, 2025, BACW postdoc Alexandra Masciantonio led a workshop on “Social Media and Mental Health” at The InnBetween Maastricht (organized by Karolina Eschen). This event provided a valuable opportunity for young people to reflect on their digital habits and gain insights into the latest scientific evidence regarding social media’s impact on mental well-being.

The InnBetween is a vibrant student chaplaincy in Maastricht that offers a welcoming space for students to connect, engage in meaningful conversations, and participate in a variety of workshops and events. With its cozy ambiance, creative design, and a focus on well-being, The InnBetween plays a crucial role in fostering a sense of community for students in the region.

During the workshop, participants explored their own social media routines and discussed key psychological research findings on how social platforms can influence mental health. The interactive nature of the session allowed for open conversations about both the benefits and potential risks of digital engagement.

To conclude the workshop, attendees played a media literacy card game called “For You”, designed to help young people better understand algorithms and artificial intelligence. This engaging game facilitated discussions about how algorithms shape the content we see online, the role of AI in digital platforms, and its broader implications for our everyday lives. The “For You” game, created by MediaSmarts, is available here.

The workshop provided an enriching experience that combined scientific insights, interactive discussions, and practical strategies, helping young people navigate the complex digital landscape with greater awareness and resilience.
