Becoming Adults in a Changing World
Development and Cultural Diversity L(a)unch
Our societies are becoming ever more ethnically and culturally diverse. Approximately a quarter of children and youth in the Netherlands and Flanders have ethnic minority backgrounds. Despite this growing presence, research on development and cultural diversity in our region remains relatively scarce. In light of this, there is a pressing need for more comprehensive research on how our children, youth, and young adults navigate culturally diverse societies.
To help spur on such research, Ouissam Abattouy and Daudi van Veen are launching the Development and Cultural Diversity network. Becoming Adults in a Changing World has provided partial funding for the initial lunch-launch event. This event aims to bring together researchers, from PhD candidates to professors, that examine how cultural diversity shapes the lives of children, youth, and young adults. We invite scholars from across relevant fields (e.g., developmental psychology, family science, educational science, social psychology) to attend. The launch of the network takes place on Monday May 6, 2024 (10:00 – 13:00) at the Academy Building, and will consist of networking opportunities and a brainstorming session. The goal of this initial meeting is to lay a strong foundation for the network, identify collaborative opportunities, and establish an agenda for its future development.
