Youth mental health on screen: towards nuanced representations that promote well-being and positivity

De mentale gezondheid van jongeren staat steeds vaker onder druk, en daarmee verandert ook de manier waarop we daar als samenleving naar kijken. Hoe kunnen media bijdragen aan een positiever, realistischer en constructiever beeld?

Tijdens dit symposium verkennen we hoe (audio)visuele media, van film en televisie tot YouTube en TikTok, bijdragen aan het vormgeven van percepties over mentale gezondheid onder jongeren. Wat zien we? Wat missen we? En wat is de rol van makers, wetenschappers en het onderwijs?

Met o.a.:
– Een lezing van Dr. Alessandra Seggi (Villanova University, USA), specialist in de representatie van jeugd en mentale gezondheid in media
– Een roundtable-discussie o.l.v. Viviënne de Wolff, met bijdragen van UU-studenten

De opening wordt verzorgd door Ari Purnama en het onderzoeksinitiatief Becoming Adults in a Changing World (UU)

Young people’s mental health is increasingly under pressure, and this also changes how we, as a society, perceive and discuss it. How can media contribute to more positive, realistic, and constructive representations?

During this symposium, we will explore how (audio)visual media, from film and television to YouTube and TikTok, help shape perceptions of youth mental health. What do we see? What is missing? And what roles can creators, researchers, and educators play?

With:
– A keynote lecture by Dr. Alessandra Seggi (Villanova University, USA), an expert in media representations of youth and mental health
– A roundtable discussion moderated by Viviënne de Wolff, featuring contributions from UU students

The symposium will be opened by Ari Purnama and the research initiative Becoming Adults in a Changing World (UU)
We’ll end the day with informal drinks (location to be announced).
